Pikes Peak or Bust
When traveling to Colorado, Pikes Peak is a must see destination. Located 14,110 feet above sea level and nestled in the Rocky Mountains, Pikes Peak is the most visited mountain in North America. Being the farthest east of the mountains, the pioneers of the 1859 Gold Rush to Colorado coined the phrase “Pikes Peak or Bust.”
Travelers and tourists head up the mountain yearly. Some go by car, others hike the 13 mile trail. But most people take the Pikes Peak Cog Railway. The railway is the highest cog train and railway in the US. Once you reach the top of the mountain, you can see four states. You can also see the cities of Denver and Colorado Springs, historic gold camps, and the Continental Divide. In the late 1800′s, Katherine Lee Bates took a trip up Pikes Peak and was so awe inspired she wrote the lyrics to “America the Beautiful.”
When you reach the Manitou Springs Depot, dine on the patio for a breathtaking view, or shop for souvenirs.
Each year, several events take place on Pikes Peak. The Pikes Peak marathon, The Pikes Peak Auto Hill Climb, and the New Year’s Fireworks display.
There are many fantastic bed and breakfasts, lodges and cabins in the area to enjoy your stay when you visit Pikes Peak. Stay in a Victorian setting, or go rustic with a log cabin setting. If you decide to stay in the area for an extended time, there is plenty to see. The Cave of the Winds is an awesome underground adventure. Check out the Cheyenne Mountain Zoo, or the Ghost Town Museum. Or just relax and gaze at the beautiful snow covered tops of Pikes Peak.
